P50G10 Delivers a quality HD experience with extras By Daniel Delena The P50G10 is my second HD Plasma experience, the first being a 2004 Panasonic, which still looks and works quite well. It has found another spot in our home to make room for the new G10 in our family room. When searching for and finally selecting the new Panasonic G10, I was comparing choices against this first experience considering both the manufacturer and the plasma technology. While I have a few smaller sized LCD's, mostly in the 20-32" range, I have never been overly impressed with the picture. The seem a bit cartoonish, even in HD mode, so I quickly settled on a plasma as my technology choice. Having made that decision the alternatives in terms of manufacturers narrowed quickly. Wh Pioneer exiting the Plasma business, and considering my experience with my original Panasonic plasma the brand decision was made. Selecting which model from Panasonic boiled down to scouring the 2009 product announcements and available reviews (CNET), and making the trade-offs on size, cost and availability. This all led me to the P50G10, which was a good fit on all points. I have had the unit installed and working for 4 weeks now, and must say its been an extremely satisfying time. The G10 is a major step up, from my previous plasma, in terms of picture, inputs i.e. 3 HDMI vs 1, and ability to control each picture setting independently. I have tweaked the picture setting on the Standard and THX settings a bit to sharpen and brighten the picture a bit, but most of the other settings are very good out of the box. As the unit is stand mounted, and in a room with mostly indirect and overhead lighting there are no issues with glare or light reflection, from the main glass or its glossy black bezel. In the process I also moved up to a Panasonic BMP-BD60 (will write a separate review on it) Blu Ray player and the 1080P picture is nothing short of amazing. As these are both Panasonic units they inter-operate with VieraLink which simplifies and automates the way the two units operate together, a nice but not essential feature. I setup a Wireless ethernet bridge (Linksys WET54G) to feed the VieraCast function on the G10, and it works flawlessly. At this time the amount of content available is limited, but one can see the potential, if Panasonic can bring more content services to this function. The G10 does employ a set of power consumption controls. There are both Input Idle and In-Activity based auto-power off modes to save on power consumption, which is good as plasma's are a bit power hungry. To be balanced the G10 does have a few shortcomings. The sound from the onboard speakers is a bit thin. You can mitigate this some by pumping up the Bass control and turning on the Bass Boost, but its just not a rich sound experience. I think Panasonic can do better with some higher quality speakers and a small sub-woofer. I, and I suspect most others, have a surround system connected and utilize it for a better sound experience. I also preferred when Panasonic placed the additional inputs into a trap door on the front of the plasma, the G10 has these on the left (facing) edge. To me it was more convenient and accessible to have these set of inputs up-front. All in all, the G10 is a high quality Plasma with terrific features and future expandability. Brown I recently purchased a Sony Bravia HDTV and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Both came with Ethernet ports but not wireless ones. I have a wireless-N network, so I found that I needed a wireless Ethernet bridge for these two new devices. They sell two bridges at Best Buy (D-link, Linksys), but they get poor reviews, cost $100, and only have a single Ethernet port each (requiring that I buy two bridges or one bridge and a hub). Many of the bridges on Amazon also have sketchy reviews. However, I saw some Buffalo devices that looked potentially interesting, with multiple ports and positive reviews on some models. So, I gave this one a shot since it comes directly from Amazon (instead of a 3rd party seller) and looks similar to other Buffalo devices that are reviewed positively. These reviews of other models warned of possible difficulties (e.g., poor documentation, issues with Windows Vista, issues connecting to non-Buffalo wireless routers that are using encryption) but claimed these difficulties could be surmounted. I got the bridge this evening and it was simple and easy to install on my network. I simply connected it directly to my PC via its Ethernet port, ran the setup disk, fed the setup program the information about my network and its encryption, and that's it. I put the bridge in my den, connected it to my TV, and I was immediately able to watch Internet-only HDTV content on my Sony Bravia (e.g., Amazon video). The whole thing took about 15 minutes from opening the box, configuring it via my PC, and popping it on my TV. Hard to see how this could be better, so I'm giving this 5 stars for now to alert folks to the utility of this product, but if I run into problems later I'll update this review. 15 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Setting up with Mac under Tiger 10.4.11 By Craig T. Morita This unit works well for streaming Netflix Instant on videos to my Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray Disc Player for playback on my Sony Bravia8 XBR TV. It is the only bridge that I found that has four plugs in the back allowing both the TV, DVD to plug in (with space to plug in an Apple TV or Apple MiniMac in the future). There is no documentation about how to use this unit with Macs. Here is a guide to my setup: To setup with Mac Tiger Os 10.4.11 or Leopard 10.5.x and a first generation Time Capsule unit broadcasting a 802.11n signal. Note that none of the supplied software will work on a Mac so web based setup is necessary for Macs. However, you can access the manual on the CD. Also the AOSS setup method will not work with Mac Airport Base stations. The Mac documentation is essentially non-existent. A major problem for WEP password users: The WEP password option used with Apple Time Capsule Airport stations and newer Airport units is a special form called WEP (Transitional Security Network) when you select the 802.11n option for network setup in the Airport Utility program. What is this? Here is the Apple description: A Transitional Security Network (TSN) is a network that uses the Transitional Security Network Protocol that allows clients to authenticate with networks in the most secure way possible, based on the capabilities of their hardware and software. Computers capable of connecting using the WPA standard will be able to authenticate using a WPA password. Computers that do not meet the requirements to authenticate using WPA will use WEP instead. The same password is used on all clients of the Transitional Security Network, regardless of the specific authentication method they use. I was unable to get WEP (Transitional Security Network) passwords to work with the Buffalo unit. I attached my system to a Toshiba 46WX800 since I knew the internal speakers on an LED system would not give me the theater feel that I wanted. I have had the system for 2 weeks and love it. The system talks to my TV and knows when to turn on the TV when I place in a DVD and keeps the speaker and TV settings for "movie" that you manually set. I used the built-in Netflix everyday and did not see a lag in it. That is done via wireless dongle that comes with the unit. I have not compared the 3D to other 3D DVD units so I don't really know if the 3D is the best. But I will buy one and compare. I do see in 3D with the Toshiba TV attached! The setup of the unit is unique where it has a microphone listening to the speakers and adjusts the unit according to the room in which you have set it up. You do have to update the system when you get it. It is best to update using a WIRED LAN instead of the wireless. By the way, the tags on this are wrong this is NOT a wireless speaker system out of the box. It is a 5.1 surround with ability to go to a 7.1 with sony wireless SRS speakers that are extra cost. This unit is a little less than $300 in both Costco and Samsclub as of Jan 4, 2011. Too bad AMAZON doesn't sell it themselves. 7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Disappointed and Annoyed - Boot time lag and other issues. 2.5 Stars By Mo I bought this from Costco a few months ago mainly for the Live Streaming and Netflix features but immediately started noticing little details that eventually led me to despise this system. I've devised a Pro/Con list to break it down: PROS - - The system looks great. - When volume is maxed out it's a LOUD system with great BASS. - Upgraded from the previous 5.1 System Sony had without the Broadband connection, Netflix and other online features are great to have. - Piss off your neighbors. CONS - - Asinine boot up time - 20 seconds minimum to get sound to come on! And if you accidentally power off and power on again it will take about a minute for sound to come on (you better have a DVR to pause your show/movie while this thing limps itself to work). - You have to select the function almost every time upon starting up and adds an unnecessary step. The system seems to arbitrarily select the mode after starting up, while other systems usually have memory that will remember what mode you were in the last time before you turned it off, so if you were watching tv and decide to watch tv again the correct mode would have already beeen selected. - Background sounds seem to take priority over speech in shows and movies at times making dialogue difficult to hear clearly at certain volume levels (I'm 27 years old with no hearing issues). - Can't view and select Netflix movies from the system, you have to use your computer. This seems like one of those issues that could have been solved had they thought about it for an additional day before putting into production. - One of the speakers are now crackling, awaiting the pop any day now (we never have the system maxed out above 30, usually at 22-24 volume range). I don't recommend this system and I'm disappointed in Sony for not putting more thought/research into this before releasing. Great picture, DLNA shows promise, a few flaws - what's with the PIP By Deux Bits I have only had this TV for a few days, so this is not a complete review, but I wanted to warn others about some issues that they may find important. Picture quality is great - I have not run a calibration or tested various known sources for difficult to reproduce scenes or motion. The blacks are so good that the image color looks over saturated at the factory default setting when placed next to a panel with lower contrast ratio. (It should be kept in mind that the eye has a logarithmic response to light, and a 50,000:1 contrast ratio may not be that much more than a 30,000:1 ratio.) In the store I was comparing this panel to a 46a550 and 46a530 all at their factory default settings. The 550's image was more natural looking at the factory default setting. Watching SD analog content on digital TVs can be annoying with various artifacts visible in the conversion of the analog signal to the native digital of the TV. This TV does a very respectable job of this - with the SD images mostly just looking fuzzy and soft compared to digital content - pretty much what one might expect. The TOC feature seems like a waste of time and may introduce some issues with light bleeding in from the environment. Not a problem for me in my home environment. So, if I was happy with the image on the 550 why did I get a 750? Two reasons - Motion blur: the 650 and 750 panels have higher response times and higher refresh rates thus reducing LCD motion blur artifacts, and reason two: DLNA... DNLA is a very nice feature - super nice - I hope it takes off. DLNA takes advantage of networking and media stored on a PC to provide viewable content through the TV. What's really going on here is that the TV designers are taking advantage of the computer they have inside the TV to enable them to do more digital media things with the TV. The TV has an Ethernet network interface - wireless or wired. We're computer geeks, we have a fairly robust network and my family has a strong interest in Internet downloads of various media content - in particular video. I have various foreign video content that I cannot get on a DVD. Netflix and others (Amazon, Apple, etc) have downloadable video content, although the DRM on much of this content is a problem. The rub is you have to watch this downloaded content on a PC, or a PC hooked directly up to a TV display or some other media PC kludge. DLNA helps get around some of these issues. The DLNA capability of this model is remarkable, not perfect, but still great. You have to install a piece of software on the computer that provides a way for the PC to share content on the PC through the network interface for the TV to "see". On the TV, you use the W.link feature to access the shared content on the PC. Music, Images and Videos stored on the PC are all accessible through the TV. Remarkably easy to access and view on the TV. Fantastic. There are a few glitches - The software on the PC was not able to handle all the media I threw at it in the first go around - I backed off (why would I play music through a TV?) and the software was able to complete it's build of it's database of content on the PC. I hope this problem will get cured in future versions of the DLNA server software that runs on the PC. Another small glitch was that when I decided to end my watching of these shows stored on the PC and I exited the w.link feature it appeared to crash the TV's OS. I had older firmware (1004), so I updated to 1007 and I hope this might cure the problem, although I have no evidence of this yet. So DLNA looks very promising but it is not perfect. I have not tried viewing content that is locked with DRM of some kind, but I strongly suspect this is not going to work. Further proof that DRM is seriously flawed. Kulhawik I bought this system within a few days of it being available...the features I most liked were the wireless rear speakers and the included wireless internet connectivity - the included iPod dock was a plus. I am not an audiophile and felt like I was taking a bit of a gamble with a Samsung product since, while the picture is great, the sound on my 52" Samsung TV is not good! I have had the TV for 1 year and have been using it with an older DVD HTIB and just felt like it was time to upgrade. Had been looking at soundbar and other HTIB systems but wanted something wireless with Internet streaming - I am a gadget freak. The system sounds great. It looks great. The Internet connection for Netflix, Pandora, and connecting to a PC work exactly as advertised. Very easy to put together and configure with limited directions. The wireless rear speakers make no noise other than what they are supposed to. I did go out an buy stands for the rear speakers...I just felt like I needed to get the speakers off the floor and I am glad I did. The reasons I am not giving it a 5 star rating: First - twice so far it has lost the network connection and I have had to restart it...never during playback; only after doing some other function and then trying to switch to a network function. Second - I have my DVR connected through the BD3252 for both audio and video and there is a slight delay in` the sound when first resuming play after pausing or fast forwarding video. Third - it is not possible to change any of the configuration on the BD3252 unless you are in BD/DVD mode. To me, none of these are anything more than a mild annoyance but they are an annoyance none the less. After about 1 month, all in all I am very happy with the purchase and would not consider returning it. Great features, sub-optimal sound quality By Audiophile in PA Needing an HTIB (home theater in-a-box) that has wireless rear speakers, I looked online to see what my options were. I found limited options in the wireless home theater range. After doing some online research, I bought the Samsung BD-3252 so I thought I would give my initial thoughts on it. During my initial search for an HTIB, I found that Panasonic and Sony had a few older models (2 yrs +) that were given poor reviews by users. A significant complaint cited by many users of the older techonology was that the rear speakers were subject to a lot of interference from wi-fi networks, and such. Panasonic, Sony, and now Samsung have newer models with different wireless technology. All manufacturers seem to have launched these products recently, as there are not many user reviews or ratings out yet. Here are my thoughts on the Samsung: Wireless speakers: No interference from wi-fi networks- no problems with clarity Sound quality: Mediocre to poor. Very tinny sound, poor bass reproduction. Frequency response- 140Hz-50Hz (front speakers) and 40Hz-160Hz (subwoofer) Netflix and Pandora streaming content: Excellent! Can even stream HD content from Netflix Overall: Very easy to set-up and configure the speaker, network, and Netflix/Pandora settings. BOTTOM LINE: I like the extra features on this model- especially the Netflix/Pandora streaming content and the included blu-ray. However, the the subpar sound quality will likely result in me returning this product. By Shaunspad I have been in the market to get streaming content on my TV for a while now. I compared this unit against the LG-LHB535. The LG has some added features. 1. Built in Wifi 2. Streaming software... which means you can stream from your computer. 3. HDMI inputs. Otherwise the Panasonic works awesome. It's fast and responsive, easy to setup, small and sleek, and it's cheaper than the comparable LG unit. It includes the following features. 1. Amazon video rentals... Awesome.. However it's $3 for most regular rentals and then more for HD. I'm still a bigger fan of RedBox $1 for anything... Amazon I might be holding out on your steep prices. 2. Netflix the same as everything else... other than the interface is really simple and ugly like the PS3 interface. It's not as easy to navigate and search like the X Box 360 or on your computer. 3. Youtube which is cool. 4. Picas pictures which is neat but almost useless in some cases. 5. iPhone/iPod doc that allows audio and video playback. Very cool, it charges and doesn't display the "this accessory is not made to work with your device" message. 6. Blue ray, DVD, burned DVD's etc. 7. Two fiber optic inputs that allow you to plug in your infamous HD DVD player or some other audio sources. Would have liked to see HDMI here... LG has it. 8. Viera Link which is cool if you have a Panasonic TV like I do. It turns the stuff on off etc by communicating over the HDMI cable. 9. The sound is AMAZING for as cheap as this unit is. The speakers are crisp and clear. Very nice surround sound. I had a Sony STR-K750P, and this Panasonic system is way better. Overall the packaging was slick with everything well packaged for shipment. I couldn't find the electronic version of the manual online anywhere. The specs say it's wireless ready, which means it has a USB port on the back that you have to pay $100 to get the $5 Panasonic WIFI dongle. Total rip off. I just hard wired. The menus are not quite as elegant as the Apple TV, it also has this hard switch thing.. Basically if you need to adjust any settings, it unloads the web content dashboard thing, then takes you back to the DVD menu. So there is a bit of a lag making adjustments. I don't understand why they just didn't layer the menus and then reload if your settings require it. It also has some sort of quick on feature. Basically if you start it up from scratch, AKA no power supplied, it takes about 30 seconds to boot.. So they added this quick boot thing which makes the unit run in some kind of a standby. It tells you it will consume slightly more power while in this mode. I did have a couple times where the web interface streaming thing had garbled text, I tried powering on off, but it doesn't fully reboot if you use the quick boot. In order to get it to fully reboot, you have to turn it off, then unplug the power and re-connect. The manual isn't very descriptive and there is a lot of technical jargon as you wade deeper into the settings. Lots of color control, bit level, sound stuff, display stuff etc. It does have the capability to adjust the surround and EQ levels while playing. It's not entirely intuitive, and the manual is wrong, but it works. When you use the buttons on the bottom of the remote to adjust the surround, it displays on little screen on the unit, the levels. In the manual it tells you to use up and down to adjust these. I must have wasted 20 minutes on this part before I tried left and right and then it worked. Looks like Panasonic needs an updated manual. The firmware on the unit is 1.0 which hopefully means there will be some software updates sooner than later. It would be nice to see layered settings menus, and they have some room on the dash board for new content. The unit is so new that if you use a Logitec Harmony remote, it won't detect your unit yet. I had to use the older model Bt-300 or something

Expectations Run High By Christopher Deweese When you spend $1500 on a piece of technology you have certain assumptions and expectations about it. You do your research the best you can and hope that your purchase will be everything you hoped it would be. Occasionally, you are thrown for a loop and presented with some challenges that you didn't anticipate. That's what happened to me when I picked up this excellent TV. My old Sony LCD did not have HDMI ports, so I was relegated to the spaghetti bowl of component hookups to achieve high definition. I just had to have a TV with HDMI, so when I was finally in the market I knew it would have to be at least 46", LCD or something comparable, full 1080p, and have plenty of HDMI ports on it. With the exception of one small issue, this TV is everything I wanted. I must say that the Samsung UN46C6500 LED TV is astonishing to look at. The colors are rich and saturated, black levels are the blackest I've ever seen, and the images are crisp and clear. The screen is a glossy finish, so it does reflect any light you might have in the room, but it's not overly distracting. The panel itself is super thin, only about one inch thick. The stand is very sturdy. Touch sensitive buttons line the lower right hand corner of the panel (kind of hard to see, but they're responsive). The bezel has a brushed matte charcoal grey strip covering a transparent acrylic (very elegant). The one problem I have with this TV is not listed anywhere except inside the manual. I didn't see any other documentation or warnings about this, so I was a little disappointed when I encountered it. This TV is not compatible with HDMI versions older than 1.3. My old Onkyo receiver (TX-SR604) came with HDMI 1.1, so the TV would not display images through it. I had always thought that HDMI was backwards compatible. It's not on this TV, and the manual clearly says that if you have any components with HDMI versions older than 1.3 you may have issues with sound and video. Beware. Because I was so disappointed that I would not be able to use HDMI through my receiver, I decided to upgrade to the Denon AVR-791 (which supports HDMI 1.4 and is 3D ready). Even though I'm another $500 poorer, I'm an extremely happy camper. Watching Avatar on blu-ray with this setup is truly amazing. The TV performs wonderfully and is otherwise exactly what I was wanting. I have not ventured into the internet TV features, but that's on the horizon. Unfortunately, the TV is not wifi compatible (unless you buy a USB adapter), so you'll need to use an ethernet cable (I actually knew this before buying). Samsung makes incredible LCD and LED TV's. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a high definition viewing experience. Hopefully, my review will educate and warn those with older components. HDMI is the way to go, but you can always fall back on component cables if you have to. That just wasn't an option for me. When all is said and done, I don't regret my purchase at all. Good picture, very bad sound and other deficiencies By Yee Lee What's good: an excellent picture (good blacks, vivid though slightly unnatural colors), classy looking thin panel What's bad: very poor sound (single back-firing speaker, not even stereo sound),highly reflective screen (glare problem), ugly and obstructive 4-footed stand, poorly designed remote control, WiFi setup buggy. Had this TV for about a month, have not yet calibrated it with a HDTV calibration DVD but was able to eyeball adjust the brightness, contrast, and color settings to get a very pleasing picture. But no amount of playing with the audio settings could I get a decent sound. Dialogs all sound tinny, the best I could do was to cut the "10K" equalization setting down to minimum to reduce the "tinny-ness" of spoken words at the expense

After deciding on a Samsung HTIB system to integrate with my 2-year-old Samsung 46" HDTV, I came across this HT-BD1250 system at Best Buy with all the features I wanted (Bluray, surround sound with wireless to the rear speakers, Anynet+ integration, iPod integration), plus a few that I decided were "nice-to-have" (wireless network integration/Pandora/Netflix). Once I realized I would need to add the Samsung SWA-4000 wireless speaker amplifier and additional HDMI and optical cables for integration with my TV and HD/DVR cable box, the total package through Amazon was by far the best deal and way to go. First quick note: You DO NOT need anything other than BASIC HDMI cables, which when purchased as a package here with Amazon are 80+% cheaper (even with the shipping charge from the third-party vendors) than if you buy them at Best Buy or other brick/mortar. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE on so-called "higher end" HDMI cables. As for the HTIB system itself, I found that the documentation guided me through most of my installation/cabliing scenarios, and everything worked pretty much the first time once I powered everything up. I needed to make a few calls to Samsung tech support to get everything configured the way I wanted (I had some specific questions about the video/resolution modes switching between HD and non-HD inputs), but the support was English-speaking and reasonably competent. (I only got one "bum steer" from their tech support when I was making what turned out to be a user error on my part with the iPod integration, but the tech also didn't identify it correctly and wanted me to send the unit in for service at my own expense...not an acceptable option. I later walked away from it for a few hours and then returned back to it with a clear head, and figured out my error in using the setup menus, and it turned out all was well after all.) I should probably mention my wiring/integration setup: I have a Samsung LN-4661F HD TV, a Motorola HD/DVR cable box from my cable company, and now my Samsung HT-BD1250 HTIB. Cabling is as follows: HDMI Out from the Motorola HD/DVR cable box to HDMI In 1 on the TV (CATV audio and video are integrated on the HDMI), HDMI Out from the HD-BD1250 HTIB to HDMI In 2 on the TV (for DVD/BD video), and Optical Audio Out 1 from the TV to Optical Audio In 1 on the HD-BD1250 (to feed the CATV audio back from the TV to be reproduced through the HTIB's sound amplifier). I attempted to use a "standard" USB wireless network adapter to integrate with my home wireless network and found that it was unable to detect it; I suspect I could have made it work with some additional initial configuration first on my laptop, but I ended up scrapping that idea and I simply ordered the Samsung Wireless adapter for this unit, and it integrated perfectly with my home network in minutes. If you're really tech-savvy and think you can get a "standard" USB wireless adapter configured to work with this, I suppose you could try to do so and save $30 or $40, but for $79.99 the Samsung WIS09ABGN adapter works right out of the box and is a supported solution. As for the wireless network/Internet integration itself, I've tested Pandora and it works well; haven't tested Netflix on demand yet. I also have yet to be able to figure out how to get integration with my PC via wireless to work as a source input (like to access music/multimedia I have on my PC), but it's an advertised feature of this system and I'm confident I can hack my way through and make that work eventually...not a priority for me, though, just another "nice to have". The iPod integration works fairly well, but I'm a little disappointed that I was not able to figure out how to make "Shuffle" functionality work...I seem to be stuck playing my music in the order it's stored in my playlists. Not sure yet if this is a limitation

By Paul MCRAE I picked up one of these along with the V101 in a combo package to run my Xbox 360 and DirecTV DVR downstairs from the cable modem and router in my upstairs office. I had been using wireless networking for the past several years but had issues with wireless failing from time to time and went through 3 routers over 3 years accordingly. Since the wired portion of the routers worked just fine at retirement in each case, I thought I'd give an alternative a try. I researched a few different brands and finally settled on Netgear's Powerline offering. I specifically went with the ones rated for 200Mb for HD streaming options. I am very satisfied with the performance so far. The Windows Media Center functionality with my Xbox 360 is finally performing in a manner that I expected. With wireless I was getting VERY slow response in the Media Center menu but it operates much more smoothly with the Powerline adapter connected. I ordered an additional adapter for a computer and DirecTV DVR in another room of my home and all 3 devices are operating well together with excellent connection speed. In addition, setup was completely simple. It was literally plug and play. No configuration required whatsoever. Ware I've used Netgear Powerline Ethernet products for a long time and they are great. The units are brainless to setup and work as described to extend your internet connection without the worry of wireless coverage issues. I was interested in this product as it seems like more devices connected to your TV are wanting internet connectivity. Some of my devices have wireless built in already but I would rather run them over wire for online gaming and streaming HD movies. Right now I have a PS3, Blue ray player, Dish network box, and Apple TV hooked up to my Netgear and all work great. I like the QOS for the ports so that I can place my PS3 and Apple TV at higher priority then the blue ray player and Dish Network box. The ports are color coded based on priority which makes it easy for non technical users who may purchase this. The unit seems to run cool which is nice for a TV cabinet and has power saving features as well. As the product description states, this needs to be used with another adaptor like the XAV101 powerline eithernet unit that then hooks up to your router so if you don't have one there is a similar package of this device for more money that has the adaptor included, this package just has the 4 port AV unit. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. You just plug it into the wall, and then plug your internet-ready devices into the adapter. We have a Wii and the Roku device for Netflix hooked up and the signal is great. A Blu-Ray Player that's full featured and relatively inexpensive By FH I felt compelled posting a review of the BMP-BD55 after receiving the unit today. I'd been holding off buying a standalone Blu-Ray player given the dearth of Profile 2.0 machines and along with their crazy prices. For those who aren't familiar with the Blu-Ray format, there are many different versions of Blu-Ray players that have varying functionalities lingering in the market today. They are: Profile 1.0, Profile 1.1 (this seems to have become the standard for the new low-end models), and Profile 2.0 (finalized standard). I will keep this review/opinion piece as free of tech-babble as much as possible. You ay want to avoid most Profile 1.0 players. The reason why I say this is for the following reasons: 1. A large number of them are very slow at booting up. 2. They often have problems playing new Blu-Ray movies, some early models won't play some recent BD movies at all. Many of these machines do not come with HDMI 1.3, meaning you may not be able to get take advantage of the newer HD audio formats. Profile 1.1 machines have been released in the last year and can play the vast majority of new discs but cannot take advantage of the new online functionalities and special features many new discs are shipping with. Also, updating the firmware can be cumbersome requiring a PC download, then that download being burned to a CD, and then that CD being inserted into your player, and then installed onto player. Profile 2.0 machines are known as "Final Profile" or "Full Spec". These players come with a network interface, aka an Ethernet card. The Ethernet card allows you to connect your player directly to your home network. The significance of this is that with an Ethernet connection you will be able to directly download firmware updates to your player eliminating the several steps in the firmware updating process. Also, internet-based special features are available. This is my first standalone Blu-Ray player. Since 2006, I have been using my Playstation 3 (60GB launch model) in anticipation of a full-featured standalone Blu-Ray player that didn't cost an arm and a leg. The moment I read the press release and technical specs of the BMP-BD55 I knew this was the machine to buy. The features that stood out to me are: 1. This machine has Onboard decoding of Dolby TrueHD/Digital Plus and dts-HD Master Audio audio formats, among others. This means, if you have an older receiver this machine can send the audio via bitstream or PCM, and you'll be able to enjoy the discrete audio mastered on the disc. 2. I have an older 7.1 Yamaha receiver HTR-5960 and it does not decodes the HD audio formats. **Correction** That is where your audio options begin with the BMP-BD55, as it can send decoded 7.1 and 5.1 audio to my receiver via the analog output. In other words you're not tethered, per se, to HDMI to enjoy 7.1 or 5.1 master audio and can put off buying that new receiver. The Optical Out interface supports DTS-ES, Dolby Digital EX, among more but 7.1 is down mixed. 3. Profile 2.0. Simple firmware updates, which are done automatically. Access to the internet-based special features, such as trivia games, extra behind the scenes, downloadables like ringtones etc.. 4. This machine has an SD card reader. It can read SD cards up to 32GB (if the card has SDHC on it, then the Panasonic will play it). This means you will be able to view your Photos (from your digital camera: still or video), play MP3 songs, view Divx (aka those movies you downloaded from the internet), etc. I definitely recommend you getting an SD card because you may need it for future special internet- features (which are only going to get larger), as the onboard memory is rather limited. Unfortunately, a thinly disguised Sharp BD-HP70U By WDH UPDATE: Netflix was added via firmware on roughly 8/14 The news of Pioneer's departure from the plasma market shook the AV community a little over two years ago. Questions abound as to what the future would hold for Pioneer in a post Kuro world. Fans of their Blu-ray players - begun in earnest with the 51FD/05FD - wondered if a joint venture with Sharp would lead to a dilution of the high quality A/V performance at a very reasonable price point. The release of the budget-priced Pioneer BDP-120 was to some a harbinger of this venture manifesting itself in what appeared to an amateur eye as a largely re-badged Sharp player veiled beneath a Pioneer chassis. Its performance was nowhere near its 320 and 23FD brethren and its price point reflected such. Emerging news of the 320's replacement came from European sources boasting Youtube streaming, which hinted the promise that US customers might get Netflix streaming or even some of the other instantly streamed video sources. The BDP-330 was largely unannounced until I found one in a Best Buy half-an-hour's drive from my house. Upon lifting the all-white box, I noticed immediately that it was light, which caused me to prolong any disappointment until I got an opportunity to put it through its paces. I was a bit surprised the box made no mention of Youtube or any streaming services. Upon unboxing the player, I was a bit surprised at how small and shallow its profile really was. It makes the 320 look downright large. The biggest immediate disappointment was the rear output panel, which was identical to the European press photos completely devoid of multichannel analogue outputs. The Burr-Brown DAC-equipped MCH analogue outputs were one of the 320's strongest selling points. The player was made in April of 2010 in China; please note this is a departure from the Malaysian-built 320 and later 51s. The 120 was also made in Sharp and has a number of rear panel similarities including the power cord input's design. The player also shares the exact same model number remote as the 120 - VXX3351, which appears nearly identical to the 320, but including some strangely labeled buttons (page +/- and keylock) missing the video adjust button (this all but eliminated the hope that this might be a "real" Pioneer for me). Upon firing up the player, I was greeted by the familiar Pioneer menu, but a very different setup menu that was very similar to the 120 best I can remember. Here's where the disappointment turns real: there is no Netflix; only Youtube and RSS. Gone is the slicky black background menu and appeared is the simple text and icon menu I remember from Sharp players. No choice for colorspace or high-speed HDMI...Just resolution. For folks who have been accustomed (spoiled) by the amount of tweaking possible with the 320/23/51/05, this is a huge disappointment. All video adjustments options of the 320/23 are GONE. No Preset modes like Pioneer PDP or Projector. Once again, just resolution. This player is certainly not of the linneage of the current 320 or 51 with their extensive picture adjustment menus and presets. From this standpoint, the 330 is very disappointing. In respects of load times, the quick start feature added very little discernable benefit to load times, that were very pokey. In fact, the current 320 was faster in actual load times in all the discs I tested than the 330. Other than the 2 second power off eject time, the Pioneer BDP-330's load times were embarrasingly so for a 2010 player whose peer group can load the same discs in a third of the time.
